Hours of Work: 30 hours/week, Weekdays/Weekends
Wage: $17.60/hr
We are looking for compassionate and caring individuals who reside in the Sarnia-Lambton/Lambton County area to provide Mental Health Support with our Tel Check Program.
The Tel Check program offers calls to seniors and individuals with disabilities who live alone in Lambton County. Providing clients with social contact, reassurance, and a sense of connectivity while unobtrusively monitoring physical, nutritional, and mental health needs during telephone conversations.
Students will work remotely in their home in a private space under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator.
As part of the Canada Summer Jobs, to be eligible, youth must:
be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and
have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Daily Safety Check-Ins: Placing scheduled telephone calls to clients to verify their health and safety.
Companionship and Support: Provide emotional support to seniors (55+) and adults with disabilities, helping them cope with isolation.
Medication Reminders: Reminding clients to take their medication during the check-in call.
Monitoring Health Changes: Assessing if the caller is distressed or if there is a significant change in their well-being.
Crisis Response: Following established procedures for emergency situations if a client does not answer the phone or if a crisis is identified.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Communication Skills: Exceptional oral and written skills to provide, explain, and document information. Ability to speak with a slower cadence.
Active Listening & Probing: Ability to listen carefully to understand caller needs, remain non-judgemental, non-directive and non-intrusive while providing emotional support.
Conflict Resolution & Diplomacy: Ability to manage difficult, emotional, or agitating callers professionally while adhering to established standards, and resolving complaints diplomatically.
Organizational Skills: Ability to prioritize telephone calls, emails, and tasks within tight timeframes.
Patience & Empathy: Essential for dealing with distressed callers.
Reliability & Punctuality: Working independently or in a team with minimal supervision.
Professionalism: Maintaining a calm demeanor under pressure.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possess or be able to obtain a valid negative Vulnerable Police Sector Check.
Relevant experience working with vulnerable individuals is not required but an asset.
Reliable, uninterrupted internet connection.
Quiet and private home workspace.
Use of a cell phone and computer/tablet.
